Roberta Lawrence is behind the creation of the Indigenous Youth Employment Program run internally at Green Maintenance. It is a fresh vision for the company.
Choosing a career can be daunting, we are providing the opportunity to trial run the job that may fill the next 50 years of your life.
This program provides young Indigenous men and women with the opportunity to gain experience when entering the world of employment in the Building and Construction Industry.
We are providing the opportunity to spend time on the road, working in real life situations, with qualified trades men and women across many areas including Carpentry, Floorlaying, Painting, Locksmithing and Paving, all whilst earning an income.
During the 6 week trade program the opportunity is given to spend time with several trades. The option to choose 3 or more trades is encouraged as we have had people start out wanting to become a painter and find their love for carpentry. We are helping these young men and women gain an understanding of what the life of a trades person is truly like.
It is not just the trade alone that can be daunting; inductions, toolbox talks, interaction with tenants, time sheets and complying with safety procedures are all examples of working life and covered by our experienced team.
The intent was to give participants an advantage when applying for jobs following the program and to give future direction , but we have gained two full time employees within the company after participation thus far.
